SA Power Networks has launched a new program giving people with little or no IT experience an exciting pathway into a cyber security career - and it's believed to be one of the first in Australia.

The Cyber Kickstart Program

The Cyber Kickstart Program is designed to help build the next generation of cyber security professionals.

Run in partnership with the Australian Computer Society, it’s aimed at people looking to pivot into, or start a career in cyber security, who have no or limited cyber security/IT experience, whether they’ve just finished school or are looking to change their career path.

“This initiative will help bridge the talent gap in South Australia by cultivating a new generation of skilled cyber security professionals and helping people take their first steps into our industry,” SA Power Networks Head of Cyber Security and IT Resilience Nathan Morelli said.

“The goal is to give them the skills, experience and confidence to become highly sought-after cyber security professionals by the end of the program, which benefits the whole industry.

“We’re proud to offer this opportunity, which we believe is one of the first of its kind in Australia, and we hope it inspires not only more people to move into cyber, but also other organisations to create programs like this.”

Initially, there are up to four positions available in the program, with two of the successful applicants joining us in July and another two in January.

How it works

Over two years, the successful applicants will work with our cyber security team to grow their skills while gaining industry-recognised certifications and hands-on experience in real-world situations.

They’ll spend three days a week working alongside members of our Cyber Security team, and two days in a structured learning program through Australian Computer Society. Their studies will cover IT and cyber security fundamentals and cyber security technologies, finishing with a personalised pathway.

They’ll also gain hands-on experience with leading security technologies, and opportunities for mentorship and networking as part of our award-winning and well-respected team.

Who’s eligible?

We’re looking for people with a strong interest in IT and cyber security, a willingness to learn, strong communication skills, the ability to work both independently and in a team, problem-solving abilities, and a basic knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office 365. No cyber security experience required.

Applicants must:

  • Have a senior secondary certificate of education (or equivalent),
  • Be at least 18 years old when they apply,
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
