SA Power Networks have partnered with the Australia Day Council of South Australia for the second consecutive year to help bring a range of events to the community in Adelaide on Sunday (26 January).

In particular we are proud to be involved with the Open Circle group of First Nations leaders who have helped plan events to be held in the city, including a Smoking Ceremony, Community Parade, and indigenous artists for the evening Concert.

General Manager Customer and Community Sue Charlton says the partnership is about providing First Nations people a way to engage with the day in their own way. 

“Both this year and last year, the projects have really been brought to life through consultation with the Open Circle group, who have expressed their desire to engage and open people’s hearts and minds in a thoughtful and thought-provoking way,” she adds.

In a series of videos members of this group tell us their stories and how they are engaging with this year’s events.

In 2019, SA Power Networks successfully supported the digital installation “Kumangka, Mukapainga, Tampinga – Together, Remember, Recognise” in Elder Park.

This year, at the request of the Open Circle discussion group, SA Power Networks is assisting to expand the impact of the Smoking Ceremony in the morning and making Indigenous music a central part of the evening celebrations.

From the Smoking Ceremony “Mourning in the Morning” until the last pulsating sound is played by the fabulous Electric Fields, everyone is invited to come along to Australia Day in the City on Sunday 26 January to listen, to reflect, to celebrate and spend time with family and friends … and maybe make a few new ones!
