Mount Barker depot welcomes two new female apprentices to the team

The Mount Barker depot proudly welcomed Tess and Laycee as part of their new cohort of female apprentices. While there have been female apprentices at this depot in the past, Tess and Laycee represent a commitment to fostering inclusion and diversity. Their journey represents a significant step towards creating a workplace where diverse perspectives lead to stronger outcomes for everyone.

Both apprentices bring enthusiasm, drive, and fresh perspectives to the job. “I’ve known friends and family who work as powerline workers at SA Power Networks, so I had an idea of what to expect. I wanted to prove that women can come into a male-dominated field and meet all the expectations anyone else would in the business. It’s empowering to grow the female profile here, and the men are quite supportive,” says Tess. Laycee adds, “I wanted to push myself in a new direction and take on a challenge. Every day is different—unlike many traditional female roles, I get to work outside, and there’s so much opportunity and variety here. You’re always learning, which is really cool.”

Their presence at Mount Barker not only challenges the status quo but also paves the way for more women to consider a future in the power industry. “Having female powerline workers join our team has had a positive influence in the depot. It’s a big step forward for us, as they are the first women to be employed at the Mount Barker depot during my time here,” said Timothy Curnow, Operations Supervisor at Mount Barker.

As we continue to grow our workforce, we’re actively looking for new apprentices to join the team at Mount Barker. Our apprentices enjoy hands-on training, the support of a dynamic crew, and the chance to contribute to their community. We especially encourage applications from all genders, First Nations, and people from diverse backgrounds.
