Community grant powering STEM learning at Bute
Bute Early Learning Centre and Primary School, with the support of an SA Power Networks Community Grant, has enhanced its STEM education program, bringing innovative learning tools to students of all ages.
The grant has enabled the school to purchase Makedo construction kits and Makeblock Mbot 2 robotics kits, designed to spark creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Students of all ages have had the opportunity to engage in both teacher guided and open-ended, student-led STEM lessons using the Makedo kits. These kits provide opportunities to explore design and engineering through construction. The school community's generous donations of cardboard have allowed students to practice sustainability and learn the value of repurposing everyday items to create something new.
For older students, the Makeblock Mbot 2 robotics kits have opened doors to the world of robotics and coding. Through block coding, students are beginning to understand the fundamentals of programming, robotics, and broader concepts like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). These advanced tools allow students to connect multiple devices, gaining insight into how IoT-enabled communities work and developing an appreciation for interconnected technology’s potential.

Beyond technical skills, these STEM projects encourage students to develop essential life skills like problem-solving, persistence, and teamwork. Principal Richard Hall highlighted the impact of the grant, stating, “Without support from this grant, we would not have been able to acquire these resources. Being a small school, our subject budgets don’t stretch that far. If we had to purchase these ourselves, it would have taken years, limiting the impact of these incredible tools.”
The grant has empowered Bute Early Learning Centre and Primary School to offer meaningful, high-quality STEM experiences that are usually beyond reach for smaller schools. Through this support, the school is equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
