Innovative approach to sustainability further improves our waste management results

The results for our Waste and Recycling Performance Review for 2024 are in, and its great news. We've increased our diversion from landfill up to an all-time organisational high of 90%.
This means that nine out of every ten pieces of waste generated within our organisation were successfully kept out of landfill last year – a big achievement for a business of our size and complexity, operating across all of South Australia.
At SA Power Networks, we are always looking at innovative ways to improve our performance and make a positive impact on our environment.
Turning waste into wealth
In 2024, we pioneered a new recycling initiative for insulators, which are typically made of steel and either porcelain, ceramic, or glass. Globally, insulators have been a challenging waste issue, with the majority ending up in landfill. However, at SA Power Networks we've turned this problem into a solution.
Working closely with our metal recycling partner, Infrabuild, we've developed a process to crush all insulators across our business. This allows us to extract the metal, which we then profitably on-sell, turning waste into a resource. The remaining components are repurposed into road base, giving them a new lease on life. This initiative reduces waste and contributes to a circular economy, where resources are reused and repurposed, rather than discarded.
What's next
We're proud of our achievements, but we're not stopping here. We're continually exploring new ways to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for South Australia and beyond. Stay tuned for more exciting environmental initiatives from SA Power Networks!
